What is Pilates?

In the 1920s Joseph Pilates developed a series of exercises to promote strength and flexibility.  Pilates focuses on the importance of your stability muscles to gain control with flexibility.   It promotes efficiency of movement through repetition and an enhanced mind body connection.

‘Pilates develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind and elevates the spirit.’

Clinical Pilates

Since Joseph Pilates developed his original repertoire of exercises there has been a lot more research on the importance of our stability muscles.  In particular, the ‘core’ abdominal muscles.  Weakness of these muscles or other muscle imbalances can lead to injury and pain.

Clinical Pilates integrates the latest research with Joseph’s original repertoire to provide you with the ultimate, safe Pilates experience for rehabilitation, fitness and fun!

Who is it for?

Pilates is suitable for almost everyone.  Exercises can be easily modified to accommodate most conditions and can be advanced to target areas of performance.

What does it involve?

Pilates can be performed either on the floor or with specialist equipment.  At Te Ngae Physiotherapy and Pilates we have a Reformer, Trapeze Table and a large variety of small props for matwork.

Pilates sessions last 1 hour to allow a full body workout that promotes flexibility, posture, stability co-ordination and relaxation.  Pilates is designed to be an ongoing exercise regime which will continually challenge you mentally and physically.

All exercises incorporate the use of deep (core) abdominal muscles and controlled breathing.  As Pilates is a movement based therapy please wear clothing that will allow you to move freely.

For private, dual and group equipment clients your initial one hour session will include postural analysis, muscle balance assessment and discussion of your goals.  Your Pilates instructor will then guide you through an individualized, targeted workout.

All private, dual and group equipment sessions are all by appointment.  Please contact us to book your first 1 hour session.  Dual and group equipment clients will then need a further 2-3 private sessions to become familiar with their exercises and the equipment.

In addition to onsite group sessions, Mat classes are run at Lynmore Primary School in the mezzanine floor of the gym.

Our Mat classes have a maximum of 10 people to allow plenty of assistance by the instructor.  They include the use of rollers, thera-band and the Pilates chi ball.

Mat Classes are run at the following times:

Tuesday:      6-7 pm and 7-8 pm

Thursday:    6-7 pm and 7-8 pm

Saturday:     9-10 am

Please contact us to enroll and discuss which session would be at a suitable level for your needs.

‘You will feel better in 10 sessions, look better in 20 sessions and have a completely new body in 30 sessions’
